Employees with Disabilities- 3 Common Accepted Employer Accommodations

“The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is federal law that protects disabled employees from being discriminated against in the workplace. Consistent with the ADA, employees with disabil0126ities are permitted under California disability discrimination law to request reasonable accommodations from their employers in order to help them perform their job duties.”

In California, employers are legally bound to provide a disabled employee reasonable accommodations. One stipulation- the cost of this accommodation can not be deemed an undue hardship to the employer.

3 Common Requests workers with disabilities can legally make  

“Code of Regulations Section 7293.6(p)(2) lays out several reasonable accommodation examples that employees can request from their employer.” Here are just 3 common ones:

  1. Employers must modify workspaces to accommodate a disabled employee, like- making break rooms and restrooms accessible, retrofitting stairs with a ramp, and refashioning workplace equipment, furniture, and devices, etc
  2. If an employee requests it, the location of job performance can be moved. It is often deemed necessary to allow an employee to perform their job duties with a work-from-home arrangement, at a different worksite location, or to use a telework solution.
  3. Employers must allow an employee to bring an assistive animal to work. Usually, the animal is a service dog.
