Slips, trips, and falls are some of—if not the—most common workplace accidents and injuries. In the United States, as many as one million Americans suffer slip and fall injuries annually, and tens of thousands die as a result of these accidents, according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). What’s more, these types of accidents account for approximately 15% of all on-the-job incidents, making up about 12 to 15% of all workers’ compensation claims.

Types of Workplace Slip and Falls
There are two main types of work-related slip, trip, and fall accidents:
- Elevated Falls: An elevated fall, also known as a fall to a lower level, occurs when an individual slips, trips, and/or falls from above to a lower level. Falling from scaffolding and other structures are examples of elevated falls.
- Same-Level Falls: Same-level falls occur when a person slips and falls to the ground, rather than from one height to a lower one. These types of slip, trip, and fall accidents are the more common of the two, but they are no less serious than elevated falls.
Often, both elevated and same-level falls occur due to unsafe conditions in the workplace.
Some examples of unsafe workplace conditions include:
- Slippery or wet floors
- Uneven surfaces
- Insufficient lighting
- Improper training or supervision
- Uncleaned spills
- Weather-related hazards
- Ripped or torn carpeting
- Safety standard violations
- Poor structural integrity
- Inadequate fall protection
- Cluttered walkways and aisles
- Uncovered cables or wires
- Unsecured or loose mats, rugs, and other floor coverings
- Defective conditions
These and other dangerous conditions can have devastating consequences for workers, leading to catastrophic bodily injuries and, in the worst cases, death.
Common Slip, Trip, and Fall Injuries
Workplace slips, trips, and falls can have serious consequences, including severe injuries requiring extensive medical attention and weeks or months off work. In some cases, victims may suffer significant injuries that cause lasting impairments or even lifelong disability.
Some of the most slip and fall injuries include:
- Back injuries
- Bruises, scrapes, cuts, and abrasions
- Head and neck trauma
- Spinal cord injuries
- Bone fractures
- Concussions
- Internal organ damage
- Traumatic brain injuries
If you or someone you love suffered a serious slip, trip, and/or fall leading to devastating injuries, the future can seem incredibly unclear. How will you be able to afford your medical bills? What will you do while you are out of work? Who is responsible for paying for your damages, including your lost wages while you recover?

What to Do If You Slip or Fall at Work
In California, there are certain steps you must take after any work-related accident or injury to protect yourself and your rights, including your right to workers’ compensation benefits.
If you are injured in a slip, trip, and/or fall accident on the job, be sure to do the following:
- Seek Immediate Medical Attention: If necessary, call 911. Otherwise, go to the nearest hospital, urgent care center, or doctor’s office. Even if you believe your injuries are minor, you should always get medical attention after a work-related accident. This is critical not only for your continued health and well-being but also for the success of your future workers’ comp claim.
- Report the Accident to Your Employer: You should inform a supervisor about the accident as soon as possible, but do not wait more than 30 days to report the incident to your employer. If you do, you could lose your right to file a workers’ compensation claim and recover benefits for your work-related injury.
- Complete Necessary Paperwork and Forms: You will need to complete the Division of Workers’ Compensation (DWC) Form 1 and return it to your employer, along with an Application for Adjudication of Claim no later than one year from the date of the accident/injury. This form is used to officially file for workers’ compensation and must be submitted alongside several other required forms.
State laws require you to choose a doctor within your employer’s Managed Provider Network (MPN) in most cases. However, you are allowed to request a doctor of your own choosing if your employer provides regular health care coverage, and you have provided a “pre-designation” (AKA written notice) informing your employer that you want to use your own doctor if you are injured at work. Without this pre-designation, you will most likely need to use a physician approved by your employer, at least for your initial treatment.
Note that this does not apply in emergencies. If you require emergency medical attention, you do not need to worry about finding a doctor in your employer’s network right away. Simply get the immediate care you need.
You can also switch doctors if you are unhappy with the first physician you see. If your employer uses an MPN, you can request a new doctor at any time after the initial appointment. If the insurance company has a health care organization (HCO), you can switch to an in-network physician, but the HCO will find one for you. Additionally, there is a waiting period depending on whether you have regular work-provided health care insurance.
