Why Were Philips CPAP Machines Recalled?
On June 14, 2021, Philips issued a recall on certain CPAP devices due to rising concerns about the health risks encountered while using the products. Philips manufactured the recalled machines between 2009 and April 2021.
After the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) publicly alerted users and health care providers about the CPAP machine recall, the Philips manufacturing facility was inspected in August 2021. The FDA determined that the polyester-based polyurethane (PE-PUR) foam used in certain CPAP machines, as well as ventilators and BiPAP machines, was defective. The foam was originally placed in the devices to reduce sound.
The breakdown of the defective foam caused debris to enter the air pathway of the machines – where, unfortunately, machine users inhaled the potentially hazardous debris. In some cases, the side effects of inhaling this toxic debris were severe and potentially life-threatening.
What Philips Machines Were Recalled?
Not all Philips CPAP machines were part of the recall. In all, 20 Philips products were deemed unsafe – 13 of them were CPAP and BiPAP devices, while the other seven were ventilators.

What Should I Do if I Used One of These Machines?
The best thing you can do if you used a recalled CPAP or other machine is to seek advice from your health care provider.
For many sleep apnea patients, a CPAP machine is essential to their health. Stopping your use of the device without consulting a physician first could result in other serious health complications. Your health care provider can explain your options and ensure that your treatment continues as necessary.
Be sure to keep your machine as evidence if you decide to pursue a lawsuit. If you live in Los Angeles and were diagnosed with a life-threatening illness or are experiencing symptoms after using a recalled CPAP machine, our mass tort attorneys can fight for compensation on your behalf.

What Health Issues Can Arise After Using a Recalled Philips CPAP Machine?
There are a variety of health issues that can arise after using one of the recalled Philips CPAP machines. These concerns range from mild to life-threatening.
After inhaling the toxic PE-PUR foam particles, you could experience side effects such as:
- Pressure in your chest
- Asthma attacks
If you do not have a history of these ailments and begin experiencing them after using a Philips CPAP machine, it is critical that you seek medical attention right away. Speaking with your health care provider about your symptoms could prevent a more serious illness from forming.
Philips CPAP Machines and Cancer
Due to the PE-PUR foam particles expelled by your Philips CPAP machine, you may also be at greater risk for various cancers that affect different parts of the body. These include:
- Lung cancer
- Thyroid cancer
- Prostate cancer
Other Diseases and Conditions Caused by Defective CPAP Machines
Cancer is not the only disease associated with the recalled Philips CPAP machines. The FDA has done extensive research on the negative effects of inhaling sound abatement foam. After inhalation occurs, you could face severe respiratory illnesses, such as pneumonia, asthma, or dyspnea (difficult or labored breathing), or other long-term damage.
There have also been instances of hypersensitive reactions to the PE-PUR foam particles, such as allergic reactions. These severe reactions can be immediately life-threatening, and anyone experiencing a severe allergic reaction should seek medical help right away. Even if you have a milder allergic response, you should still inform your health care provider to prevent any future issues.
